US President Donald Trump said he recently held a productive phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with discussions centred largely on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and briefly touching on Iran.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting with NASA officials at the White House, Trump said the war in Ukraine dominated the exchange. He noted that he had encouraged Putin to consider a ceasefire, pointing to the high number of casualties in the conflict.
According to Trump, Putin appeared open to the idea of a resolution, and there is a possibility that an announcement related to a ceasefire could emerge, although no official confirmation has been made.
The US President also addressed Iran, reiterating that Washington would not allow Tehran to develop nuclear weapons. He claimed that recent US actions had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, including its naval and air defence systems.
Trump said Putin had shown interest in participating in discussions related to Iran’s nuclear programme, but he preferred that Moscow focus on helping bring an end to the Ukraine war.
On diplomatic efforts with Iran, Trump indicated that communication has primarily taken place remotely, while expressing a preference for direct, in-person talks. He emphasised that any agreement would require Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
When asked which issue, Ukraine or Iran, might see resolution first, Trump declined to speculate, suggesting both could progress on similar timelines.
The US President also offered a critical assessment of Russia’s position in Ukraine, stating that its military situation had weakened, while also taking aim at media coverage of the conflict.
The remarks point to ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow, even as tensions continue over Ukraine and broader geopolitical issues.
