US President Donald Trump received the inaugural 2025 FIFA Peace Prize during the World Cup draw event in Washington, DC, on Friday.
Football’s world governing body praised the president for what it described as major diplomatic breakthroughs and remarkable efforts to encourage peace and global harmony.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino presented Trump with a medal and certificate, noting: “This is your prize, this is your peace prize,” as he highlighted the recognition from football fans across the globe.
Infantino said the annual distinction recognises an individual who actively promotes global peace and unity through committed leadership and concrete action.
The document stated that FIFA had chosen President Donald Trump as the recipient of the 2025 Peace Prize, citing what it called his remarkable efforts to foster global harmony and unity, dated Friday, 5 December 2025.
Infantino further referred to several agreements he said he had witnessed personally.
“A few years ago, [I saw] the Abraham Accord signatures, a few months ago in Sharm el-Sheikh, the peace in the Middle East agreement regarding Gaza. I was in Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur, for the peace between Cambodia and Thailand, yesterday here in Washington, the Washington peace agreement between Rwanda and the DRC,” he stated.
“This is what we want from a leader,” Infantino noted. “And you definitely deserve the first FIFA Peace Prize for your action.”
Trump’s Acceptance Remarks
In his remarks upon accepting the award, Trump called the honour one of the greatest of his life and claimed that the diplomatic efforts highlighted by FIFA had prevented large-scale loss of life. He cited conflicts he claimed halted or de-escalated, including long-standing tensions in the Congo region and between India and Pakistan.
President Trump also praised Infantino’s leadership and the rising excitement surrounding the 2026 World Cup. He credited close cooperation with Canada and Mexico, co-hosts of the tournament, and thanked his family for their support.
“The world is a safer place now,” he asserted.
Earlier in the day, when questioned about advocating strong action against Venezuela while receiving a peace prize, Trump responded by insisting that he had resolved ‘eight wars, with a ninth on the way’, and stressed that his goal was to save lives, not accumulate awards.
