US President Donald Trump has invited PM Narendra Modi to visit Washington following his upcoming trip to Canada, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
The invitation came during a 35-minute phone call between the two leaders on Wednesday.
“President Trump asked if Prime Minister Modi could stop by the US on his way back from Canada,” Misri said. “However, the Prime Minister expressed his inability due to prior commitments. Both leaders, however, agreed to meet soon.”

The conversation also included strategic discussions on the Indo-Pacific region and the QUAD alliance.

No mediation on Pakistan: PM Modi reiterates India’s firm stand
During the call, Prime Minister Modi categorically stated that India does not seek and will never accept any mediation on matters concerning Pakistan.
Misri underlined, “There is complete political unanimity in India on this issue.”
This was the first conversation between the two leaders since the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor.
The call was arranged after a scheduled bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, which was cancelled due to Trump’s early return to the US.
“The phone conversation was held at President Trump’s request,” Misri confirmed.
India’s Retaliation to Pahalgam Attack detailed
Prime Minister Modi briefed President Trump on India’s calibrated response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 tourists. The Resistance Front, a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility.
Prime Minister Modi said Indian forces targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during the night of May 6-7.
“Our response was measured, precise, and non-escalatory,” Misri quoted the Prime Minister.
He added, “India had made it clear that it would respond to Pakistan’s ‘goli’ with ‘gola’—a strong and proportionate military response.”
Operation Sindoor: India hits back hard
Operation Sindoor saw Indian forces strike nine major terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoK.
Pakistan responded by targeting Indian military, civilian, and religious sites, prompting further escalation.
According to Misri, US Vice President Vance warned PM Modi on May 9 of a possible major Pakistani strike.
Prime Minister Modi replied that India would respond with even greater force.
The Indian counterattack during the night of May 9-10 reportedly inflicted heavy damage and disabled several Pakistani airbases.
