US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia.
The White House stated that the move aims to reinforce sanctions already placed on Russia in response to its ongoing actions in Ukraine.
National Security and Foreign Policy Concerns Cited
According to the order, India’s direct or indirect import of Russian oil poses a threat to US national security and foreign policy interests.
“Articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25%,” the order reads.
Trump Tariff Implementation Timeline and Exemptions
The newly announced tariff will come into effect 21 days after the signing of the order, excluding shipments that are already in transit before the deadline and cleared before September 17.
The order further specifies, “This rate of duty shall be effective for goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 AM EDT, 21 days after the date of this order. However, goods loaded and in transit before that time and cleared before September 17 will be exempt.”
These duties are in addition to existing tariffs, except for goods that qualify for specific exemptions listed in earlier trade directives.
US customs authorities require all affected goods to comply with strict protocols, including classifying them under ‘privileged foreign status’ when processed through foreign trade zones.
President Trump has retained the authority to modify the order if needed, based on changing geopolitical conditions, retaliatory trade actions, or policy shifts in either India or Russia.
The order also directs the US Commerce Department, Treasury, State Department, and other agencies to monitor global oil trade with Russia and recommend similar tariff actions against other nations if deemed necessary.
