US President Donald Trump has called for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to be organised again within a month, stressing that a single violent incident should not halt a long-standing national tradition.
His remarks came after a gunman disrupted the high-profile gathering at a Washington hotel. Thousands of guests, including government officials, journalists and diplomats, had assembled there.
The attacker was swiftly restrained by security personnel, and authorities confirmed that no one was injured.
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Trump said the event should be rescheduled promptly, with tighter security arrangements in place. He expressed confidence that additional safeguards, including a wider security perimeter, would allow the dinner to proceed without risk.
The President also revealed that he had encouraged organisers to continue the function on the night of the incident, indicating that cancelling it would send the wrong message. He maintained that isolated acts of violence should not dictate whether such public events go ahead.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Trump described a brief sense of togetherness among attendees once the situation was brought under control. He, however, also reiterated criticism of parts of the American media, while acknowledging that some journalists maintain fairness in their work.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is widely regarded as an important fixture in US public life. It symbolises press freedom. It also serves as a rare platform where political leaders and media professionals interact in an informal setting.
Officials are continuing their investigation into the incident, even as discussions grow over rescheduling the event with enhanced security measures.
