PM Narendra Modi’s Visit To Italy For The G7 Summit: Key Highlights

PM Narendra Modi is currently in Italy for the G7 Summit, engaging in significant bilateral meetings with world leaders. Here are 10 key points on this major event:

1. Summit Location and Context: The G7 Summit is being held at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region. India has been invited as an Outreach country, marking PM Modi’s first overseas visit since his third consecutive term began.

2. Bilateral Meetings: Prime Minister Modi has held bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He has also met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis, with further talks planned.

3. Dialogue with Ukraine: After his meeting with President Zelensky, PM Modi described the discussion as productive, emphasizing India’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral relations with Ukraine. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi reiterated India’s belief in a human-centric approach, advocating for peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

4. Meeting with France: The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted the deepening of the strategic partnership between India and France following Modi’s meeting with President Macron. Discussions covered defence, nuclear, space, education, climate action, digital infrastructure, critical technologies, connectivity, and cultural exchanges, alongside global and regional issues.

5. Russia-Ukraine Conflict Focus: The first day of the summit concentrated on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with leaders agreeing to a US proposal for a $50-billion loan to Kyiv using frozen Russian assets. US President Joe Biden described this as a significant outcome and a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

6. Prime Minister’s Departure Statement: PM Modi expressed his pleasure in making his first foreign visit of his third term to Italy for the G7 Summit. 9. Significance of Apulia: The choice of Apulia, a region in southern Italy, underlined the Italian presidency’s commitment to engaging with the Global South, as emphasized by Meloni.

10. India-Italy Trade Relations: Italy stands as India’s fourth-largest trading partner within the European Union, with bilateral trade amounting to $15 billion.
