PM Modi’s Visit To Kuwait Highlights Continued Support For Indian Workers Abroad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of the Indian diaspora abroad, with a special focus on Indian workers during his visit to Kuwait.

Indians form the largest expatriate community in the country, with around 1 million nationals contributing to various sectors of the Kuwaiti economy.

On Saturday, PM Modi visited the Gulf Spic Labour Camp, where over 90% of the residents are Indian workers, and interacted with them directly.

This visit is part of his ongoing efforts to connect with Indian workers across the world and address their concerns.

PM Modi’s Ongoing Commitment To Indian Workers Abroad: Past Efforts & Future Initiatives

PM Modi has a history of engaging with Indian workers abroad.

In 2016, he visited the L&T workers’ residential complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and also interacted with Indian workers in Doha, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.

These visits highlight his dedication to understanding the challenges faced by migrant workers and to strengthening their welfare.

One of the significant initiatives PM Modi has championed is the e-Migrate project, launched in 2014 to facilitate a transparent and efficient emigration process for Indians seeking employment abroad.

The system, integrated with services like Passport Seva and Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana, ensures a hassle-free recruitment process and reduces the scope for exploitation.

In addition, the Modi government has strengthened the Overseas Employment & Protector General of Emigrants Division, improving the process for Indians with Emigration Clearance Required (ECR) passports and opening 16 offices across India to assist them.

The government has also enhanced the Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra, which provides information and grievance redressal for migrant workers.

PM Modi has taken steps to improve the living and working conditions of Indian workers abroad.

Earlier this year, during his visit to the UAE, he announced the construction of a hospital for Indian workers in Dubai, funded by the UAE government.

After the tragic fire in Kuwait that claimed the lives of over 40 Indian workers, the Prime Minister chaired a review meeting and announced financial relief for the victims’ families.

In 2021, India and Kuwait signed an MoU aimed at protecting the rights of Indian domestic workers in Kuwait.

The agreement focuses on ensuring fair treatment and compliance with local laws, reflecting the Indian government’s commitment to improving workers’ conditions.

PM Modi Advocates For Improved Welfare & Wages

PM Modi’s vision of caring for the diaspora also led to a campaign for better wages for Indian workers in the Gulf states.

Diplomatic efforts have pushed for higher minimum salaries to meet the rising cost of living in these regions.

Through these initiatives and visits, PM Modi continues to demonstrate India’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad, ensuring their safety, rights, and well-being.
