PM Modi & Xi Jinping Set For Crucial Meeting In Tianjin During SCO Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold talks in Tianjin on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

The meeting marks the first interaction between the two leaders in ten months, following their last encounter at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024.

The discussion will centre on advancing bilateral ties, particularly as both sides have recently made progress on border management and economic cooperation.

A key development enabling this renewed dialogue was the agreement on patrolling protocols along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC), easing tensions from a four-year standoff. The agreement has been seen as an important step in restoring trust between the two neighbours.

Earlier in August, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi for boundary talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

During the visit, he reiterated that Beijing attached ‘great importance’ to PM Modi’s participation in the SCO Summit, stressing that a healthy and stable relationship benefits both nations as well as the wider developing world.

India Shows Readiness for Stronger Relations

In an interview with Japan’s The Yomiuri Shimbun ahead of the summit, PM Modi highlighted India’s willingness to deepen ties with China based on ‘mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity’.

He noted that relations since his Kazan meeting with Xi had shown ‘steady and positive progress’, pointing to signs of a thaw in ties after years of strain.

When asked about the significance of rebuilding relations, PM Modi emphasised that stable and amicable ties between India and China, the world’s two most populous nations, could positively shape both regional stability and global prosperity.

PM Modi further underlined the importance of cooperation between India and China in the current global economic context.

“Given the volatility in the world economy, it is important for both countries, as major economies, to work together to bring stability to the global economic order,” he said.

With the SCO Summit providing the backdrop, the PM Modi–Xi meeting will set the tone for future engagements, and both sides are showing cautious optimism.
