Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday thanked the Indian community in New Zealand for giving him a memorable welcome during the ‘Kia Ora Modi’ event in Auckland. He said the atmosphere reflected incredible enthusiasm and affection.

PM Modi thanked New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for joining the gathering and making the occasion more special.

In a post on X after the event, PM Modi said the Indian community in New Zealand stands as one of the strongest pillars of India-New Zealand friendship. He added that addressing the community in Auckland was a memorable experience. He also said PM Luxon’s presence showed his warmth for India and the Indian community.

More than 10,000 members of the Indian diaspora attended the event.

The venue came alive with chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as the Prime Minister addressed the crowd.

PM Modi thanked PM Luxon for his support for the bilateral partnership and for the welfare of the Kiwi Indian community. He praised the diaspora for its hard work, determination and perseverance. He said the relationship between India and New Zealand rests on memories, friendship, shared values and commitment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also referred to the Māori word ‘waka’ and said it symbolised a shared journey. He said that the journey now opens new opportunities for both nations.

According to a statement from the MEA, the Indian community in New Zealand has made strong contributions across society. It has also preserved its culture, festivals and traditions.

The MEA also noted its spirit of seva, volunteerism and charity.

PM Modi said the gathering celebrated India-New Zealand friendship, sporting ties and economic partnership. He said both countries want to deepen sporting links further as 2026 marks 100 years of sporting collaboration.

The Prime Minister of India urged the Indian community to continue acting as a bridge of trust and cooperation between the two nations. He said he had full faith in the partnership’s success.
