Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted the cultural similarities between India and New Zealand, saying both nations uphold traditions rooted in respect, compassion and selfless care.
Addressing the Indian community at the ‘Kia Ora Modi’ event at Auckland’s Spark Arena, PM Modi said both countries also share a strong commitment to preserving and celebrating their indigenous cultures.
PM Modi said the Maori community represents this shared cultural spirit. He described the Maori Haka as more than a ceremonial performance, calling it a powerful reflection of courage, dignity, self-respect and collective identity.
Traditionally performed before battles, the Haka now welcomes distinguished guests, celebrates achievements and strengthens community bonds.

Drawing parallels between Maori customs and Indian traditions, PM Modi spoke about the Maori principle of ‘Manaakitanga’. He said it symbolises respect, love and wholehearted care for others.
The Prime Minister compared it with India’s philosophy of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, saying the words, languages and customs may differ, but the underlying values remain identical.
The Prime Minister also referred to the Maori concept of ‘Whanau’, which embraces multiple generations and the wider community. He said India similarly regards family as an enduring institution rather than merely a social arrangement.
Highlighting environmental responsibility, PM Modi explained the Maori principle of ‘Kaitiakitanga’, which emphasises protecting nature rather than owning it. He compared it with the Indian belief, ‘Mata bhumiḥ putroahaṃ pṛthivyaḥ’, meaning the Earth is our Mother.
PM Modi said initiatives such as ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ and the ‘Prakrutik Kheti Mission’ reflect India’s commitment to environmental conservation.
