Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Namibia’s highest civilian award, ‘Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis’, during his one-day State Visit on Wednesday.
The honour marked his 27th international award and fourth on his current five-nation tour.
The Namibian government awarded the honour to recognise PM Modi’s leadership and global contributions.
The award, named after the Welwitschia Mirabilis plant known for its endurance, symbolises resilience and strength qualities that the Namibian people deeply value.
“I thank you and the Namibian government for conferring this prestigious award. It is a proud moment for 140 crore Indians,” said PM Modi during bilateral talks with Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in Windhoek.
Modi’s recognition in Namibia came less than 24 hours after Brazil honoured him with its highest civilian award, ‘Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross’.
The ceremony took place in Brasilia during his visit following the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Last week, during a two-day visit to Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi received ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago’.
Prime Minister Kamala Persad Bissessar called Modi “a global leader” and praised his outreach to the Indian diaspora and his humanitarian leadership during the pandemic.
On July 2, Ghana awarded Modi the ‘Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, its top national honour.
President John Dramani Mahama recognised PM Modi’s ‘distinguished statesmanship and global influence.’
Diplomatic observers noted that no previous Indian Prime Minister has received such sustained global recognition.
“PM Modi represents a new, assertive India. The world is no longer just observing — it’s honouring his vision,” said a former Indian diplomat.
The recent honours follow earlier awards this year from Cyprus, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius.
In April, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake awarded Modi the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana, recognising his role in deepening bilateral ties.
In March, Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool conferred the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’ (GCSK) on PM Modi, the first time the island nation gave its highest award to an Indian leader.
PM Modi’s current tour continues to highlight his growing international stature and India’s evolving global presence.
Each award signals deeper strategic ties and acknowledgement of India’s expanding diplomatic reach.
