Expressing his anticipation for the summit, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Tianjin, China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and meeting various world leaders.”

Key Bilateral Engagements Expected

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India’s participation underlines its constructive role in strengthening the SCO. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of the summit.

Prime Minister Modi and President Xi last met during the BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024, where both sides reached an understanding on managing patrols along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), easing a four-year-long border standoff.

India joined the SCO in 2017 and held its presidency in 2022-23. During this period, New Delhi spearheaded initiatives in innovation, healthcare, and cultural cooperation.

In his departure statement, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to the organisation, saying, “In China, I will take part in the SCO Summit in Tianjin, a forum where India has always played an active and constructive role. India will keep working with SCO members to address various shared challenges. I will also be meeting President Xi Jinping, President Putin and other leaders during the Summit.”

Founded in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a permanent intergovernmental body comprising China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.

It also includes observer states Afghanistan and Mongolia, along with 14 dialogue partners such as Turkey, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
