
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honour of Cyprus, by President Nikos Christodoulides during their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on June 16.
This historic moment marked the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean nation.
Accepting the honour, PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude on X, stating, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Cyprus for conferring upon me ‘The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III.’ This isn’t my honour. It is an honour for 140 crore Indians. I dedicate this award to the everlasting friendship between India and Cyprus. Together, our nations will contribute towards making a better planet! @Christodulides”

He further noted that the award symbolises cultural harmony and the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, ‘The world is one family’.
PM Modi emphasised that the award represented India and Cyprus’ shared commitment to peace, security, and sovereignty.
Bilateral talks & vision for cooperation
Earlier in the day, PM Modi and President Christodoulides held comprehensive discussions at the Presidential Palace.
The talks covered a broad spectrum, including trade, investment, technological collaboration, and regional security.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevate ties through strategic cooperation.
Diplomatic sources from both countries highlighted the meeting as a turning point in India-Cyprus relations, which date back to the formal establishment of ties in 1962.
Cyprus has been a consistent supporter of India at multilateral forums, including on key matters such as Kashmir.
As part of the visit, PM Modi paid floral tribute at the memorial of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a revered spiritual figure.
This gesture underscored the shared respect for cultural and historical legacies.
The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is the 23rd international honour awarded to PM Modi by a foreign nation, affirming his global stature and consistent advocacy for peace, development, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Diaspora engagement
Upon arrival in Cyprus, PM Modi was warmly received by members of the Indian diaspora in Limassol.
Despite being a small community, Indians in Cyprus have made significant contributions in fields such as education, healthcare, and business.
The Prime Minister appreciated their role in strengthening India-Cyprus ties and acknowledged their efforts abroad.
PM Modi affirmed that India and Cyprus would continue to enhance their partnership.
“Together, we will not only strengthen the progress of our two nations but also contribute towards a peaceful and secure global environment,” he stated, signalling a new chapter in bilateral diplomacy.
