PM Modi Pushes For India-Canada Trade Deal During Meeting With Mark Carney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday signalled a possible visit to Canada later this year and urged faster progress on the proposed India-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.

During bilateral talks, PM Modi highlighted the positive momentum in relations between the two countries and thanked PM Carney for his support towards the Indian diaspora.

Referring to the trade pact, Prime Minister Modi said, “You’re right that we’re very excited about the Free Trade Agreement. And, as you’ve invited me to come to Canada, I’m also trying to come this year. And, before I come, let’s complete this agreement.”

PM Modi also highlighted the scope for deeper cooperation in technology and energy security. He noted that Canada could emerge as an important partner in both sectors.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed the ‘excellent progress’ made in bilateral engagement. They also discussed strengthening cooperation in trade, energy, innovation, education and people-to-people exchanges.

PM Carney welcomed PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit. He said both nations had maintained regular engagement over the past year.

PM Carney also reiterated his invitation for Prime Minister Modi to visit Canada.

“Four continents, four meetings, one year. And right from the start, at the G7 in Kananaskis in Canada, and thank you for honouring us with that visit,” PM Carney said.

Expressing optimism about the trade negotiations, PM Carney said both countries were making ‘very good progress’ towards finalising the FTA.

“His Excellency likes a deadline. I like one as well. And our deadline is to complete by the G20,” he said, adding that growing cooperation between businesses, universities and cultural institutions was creating new opportunities for collaboration.

Last month, PM Carney described the proposed FTA as a ‘game changer’ for Canadian workers and businesses after meeting Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Ottawa. He said both sides had reviewed progress in negotiations and explored opportunities in energy, agri-food, technology and education.
