In a major diplomatic exchange ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a detailed phone conversation on Saturday, focusing on the Ukraine conflict and future cooperation between their nations.
The conversation, initiated by President Zelensky, came just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Thank President Zelenskyy for his phone call today. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction.”

The Ministry of External Affairs underscored India’s consistent stance on the Ukraine conflict, stressing that New Delhi remains committed to supporting any credible initiatives aimed at restoring peace.
Ukraine’s Call for Dialogue
President Zelensky, in his own statement on X, said he briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his talks with global leaders, including US President Donald Trump and European counterparts. He expressed frustration over Russia’s lack of constructive engagement, remarking that Moscow had only escalated attacks on civilian targets in recent weeks.
Calling for an unconditional ceasefire, President Zelensky stated, “The end of this war must begin with an immediate ceasefire, with the necessary silence.”
The Ukrainian leader also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his condolences over civilian casualties and expressed hope that India would use its diplomatic weight during SCO discussions.
“India is ready to make the necessary efforts and to deliver the appropriate signal to Russia and other leaders during the meetings on the sidelines of the summit. Thank you,” he added.

Beyond the conflict, both leaders reviewed India-Ukraine bilateral relations, discussing deeper cooperation in trade, technology, and cultural exchanges. Preparations for high-level visits and a joint intergovernmental commission were also on the agenda.
Concluding his remarks, President Zelensky expressed optimism about strengthening ties, saying he looked forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in person in the near future.
