Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, performed a symbolic ritual by pouring sacred water from the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh into Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) in Port Louis, Mauritius.
The act represents the spiritual and cultural ties between India and Mauritius, reinforcing their shared traditions and religious heritage.
Ganga Talao is a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus in Mauritius.
By adding the holy water from the Ganges, PM Modi highlighted the historical and spiritual connection between the two nations.
The Prime Minister also offered prayers and participated in an Aarti ceremony at the sacred lake.
The Significance Of Ganga Talao
Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, has been an important spiritual landmark for over a century.
According to CNN, a Hindu priest envisioned the lake’s connection to the Ganges in 1887, leading to its recognition as a sacred site.
Over the years, it has become a center of devotion for the Hindu community in Mauritius, serving as a reminder of their ancestral roots.
On Tuesday, as a token of cultural exchange, PM Modi gifted Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool a pot containing sacred Sangam water from the Maha Kumbh.
The water was stored in an ornate brass and copper vessel, metals traditionally believed to preserve the purity of Ganga water and enhance its sanctity.
The recently concluded Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj was a grand event, drawing millions of pilgrims who took a ritualistic dip in the holy waters.
Concluding on Maha Shivratri, the event symbolized spiritual devotion, unity, and cultural richness.
Earlier in the day, Mauritius awarded PM Modi its Highest National Award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.
Thousands gathered despite heavy rain to witness the event, held on Mauritius’ National Day.
Additionally, PM Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam inaugurated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation, envisioned as a center for research, learning, and governance studies.
