Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem on Thursday, laying a wreath in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
He was accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan during the solemn visit to the Holocaust Memorial and Museum, which documents and preserves the history of one of the darkest chapters in human history.
The visit included a tour of the Book of Names, a monumental installation bearing the names of 4.8 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
Prime Minister Modi also took part in a memorial ceremony at the Hall of Remembrance and signed the Yad Vashem guest book.
This visit marked his second trip to Yad Vashem, after he paid tribute at the memorial during his landmark visit to Israel in July 2017.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said the Prime Minister honoured Holocaust victims and reaffirmed a shared commitment to peace and human dignity.
He described the Book of Names as a powerful tribute to millions who perished, adding that the memorial stands as a reminder of past brutality and the resolve to oppose injustice.
During his 2017 visit, Prime Minister Modi wrote that Yad Vashem symbolises both the horrors of the past and the resilience of the Jewish people, stressing the need to remember history to guide future generations.
Currently on a two-day State Visit to Israel, PM Modi received a grand welcome from Prime Minister Netanyahu in Tel Aviv and addressed a Special Plenary of the Knesset in Jerusalem, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so and highlighting deepening India–Israel ties and a shared commitment to peace.
