Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Oman Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on Thursday reaffirmed the strength of India–Oman relations, describing their partnership as a time-tested and multifaceted strategic relationship.
During extensive discussions held at the Al Baraka Palace in Muscat, the two leaders adopted a Joint Vision Document on Maritime Cooperation, underscoring their shared commitment to regional maritime security, the blue economy, and sustainable use of ocean resources.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the excellent state of bilateral relations, which span trade, investment, defence, security, technology, education, energy, space, agriculture, culture, and strong people-to-people ties.
They reviewed progress on initiatives outlined in the Joint Vision Document that was originally adopted during Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s visit to India in December 2023.
Defence and Security Collaboration
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, India and Oman strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and reaffirmed that no justification can ever be accepted for such acts.
The two sides underlined the importance of continued cooperation to counter terrorism and enhance regional stability.
The leaders also commended the deepening defence cooperation between the two countries and agreed to strengthen collaboration through joint military exercises, training programmes, and high-level exchanges.
They further committed to undertaking joint initiatives to prevent maritime crimes and piracy by improving maritime domain awareness and ensuring continued information sharing.
Highlighting shared maritime traditions, both sides welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Heritage and Museums. The agreement enables collaboration through joint exhibitions and research initiatives.
The leaders also noted the upcoming maiden voyage of INSV Kaundinya to Oman, symbolising centuries-old maritime links between the two nations.
Cultural cooperation and people-to-people ties featured prominently in the discussions.
The leaders welcomed the joint exhibition Legacy of Indo-Oman Relations and took note of ongoing talks on culture digitisation initiatives.
They also acknowledged plans to establish an ICCR Chair Programme of Indian Studies at Sohar University, aimed at promoting academic and cultural exchanges.
Regional and Global Issues
The two leaders expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for the safe and timely delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
They welcomed the signing of the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan and reiterated their support for efforts to restore peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy, including the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.
Both sides recognised that centuries-old people-to-people ties remain a cornerstone of India–Oman relations.
India conveyed its deep appreciation to the Omani leadership for ensuring the welfare of the Indian community of around 6,75,000 residents, while Oman acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Indian diaspora to its development.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Oman.
The visit follows Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s State Visit to India in December 2023 and marks another milestone in the evolving partnership between the two maritime neighbours.
