Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday.
Describing their conversation as ‘insightful’, PM Modi reiterated both countries’ commitment to deepening bilateral ties across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, defence, and regional security.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “Insightful deliberations with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during the G7 Summit in Canada. India and Japan remain committed to further deepening bilateral ties across various sectors. @shigeruishiba”
The meeting took place shortly after Japanese PM Ishiba extended condolences over the Air India AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed over 241 lives.
On 13 June, PM Ishiba issued a heartfelt message, expressing sorrow and solidarity on behalf of the Government and people of Japan.
“I am in deep sorrow by hearing the news of the loss of many precious lives in the plane accident in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. On behalf of the Government of Japan and people, I express our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” he said.
India and Japan enjoy a deep-rooted Special Strategic and Global Partnership, built on shared democratic values and common interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting further reinforced ongoing collaboration in infrastructure development, maritime security, green technology, and digital innovation.
Both leaders agreed to continue aligning their efforts on regional stability and economic resilience.
PM Modi’s meeting with PM Ishiba was part of a series of high-level engagements at the G7 Summit.
He also held bilateral talks with leaders from the UK, South Korea, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and Canada.
These meetings underscore India’s proactive global diplomacy and its expanding role in multilateral forums.
As India and Japan mark another year of close diplomatic cooperation, both leaders expressed optimism about the future of their partnership.
With shared goals in regional peace, economic growth, and technological advancement, PM Modi & PM Ishiba’s meeting affirmed the enduring strength of India–Japan relations in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
