Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again showcased India’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage by presenting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with a handcrafted metal boat created using Bastar’s renowned Dhokra art.
The presentation, made on July 13 in Jagdalpur, has filled local artisans and traders with pride, as they view the gesture as a major step towards securing international recognition for the region’s centuries-old tribal craft.
Jagdalpur-based Dhokra trader Anil Lukkad described the occasion as a proud moment for Chhattisgarh and the entire country. He said the Prime Minister’s decision to present a piece of Bastar’s artistic heritage to a foreign leader reflects deep respect for tribal artisans and reinforces efforts to preserve traditional crafts that face the risk of disappearing.
Lukkad stated that such initiatives significantly enhance global awareness of Indian handicrafts while creating fresh employment opportunities for rural artisans. He recalled that Prime Minister Modi has consistently promoted indigenous art forms at international platforms, including the G20 Summit, where world leaders received distinctive Dhokra creations and other traditional handicrafts.
Anil Lukkad believes these cultural gifts strengthen diplomatic relations while leaving a lasting impression of India’s artistic legacy.
More than 10,000 artisans across Bastar’s seven districts currently practise Dhokra craftsmanship, although the number once stood at nearly 15,000.
Falling demand had forced many artisans to leave the profession, but renewed interest generated through the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign has encouraged many to return.
Lukkad expressed confidence that the Prime Minister’s gesture will further expand domestic and international demand, improving livelihoods for thousands of artisan families. He added that the handcrafted boat symbolises friendship, cooperation and cultural unity, representing the growing partnership between India and Australia.
