Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with Sri Lanka’s highest award for a foreign head of state- the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana- during his state visit to Colombo.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake conferred the prestigious award in recognition of PM Modi’s exceptional role in deepening bilateral ties and promoting regional cooperation.
It is a matter of immense pride for me to be conferred the ‘Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana’ by President Dissanayake today. The announcement was made following a bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
In a joint press statement, President Dissanayake said, “Prime Minister Modi highly deserves this honour. It is a symbol of the deep friendship between our nations.”
Symbol Of Timeless Bond
The Mitra Vibhushana medal is rich in symbolism.
The ‘Dharma Chakra’ reflects the shared Buddhist heritage, while the ‘Pun Kalasa’ (a pot of prosperity) symbolizes renewal. The ‘Navarathna’, or nine precious gems, represent the enduring friendship between the two countries, surrounded by lotus petals, a nod to purity and peace.
The ‘Sun and Moon’ signify an eternal relationship, transcending time and generations.
These cultural elements beautifully encapsulate the spiritual and historical connection between India and Sri Lanka.
Historic Welcome
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka accorded PM Modi a ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square-marking the first time the country has honoured a visiting leader in this way.
Despite the rain, six senior Sri Lankan ministers, including the Foreign, Health, and Labour Ministers, warmly received him at the airport.
On social media, PM Modi expressed his gratitude: “Landed in Colombo. Grateful to the ministers and dignitaries who welcomed me at the airport. Looking forward to the programs in Sri Lanka.”

Strengthening Diplomatic & Cultural Ties
During the visit, PM Modi also interacted with the Indian diaspora and watched a traditional puppet show, celebrating shared cultural ties.
His trip follows his visit to Thailand, where he attended the BIMSTEC Summit and met leaders from across South Asia.
PM Modi’s presence in Colombo marks his first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019, underscoring a renewed commitment to strengthening India’s partnership with its neighbour.
The state visit not only celebrated diplomatic milestones but also set the tone for enhanced cooperation across trade, culture, and regional security.
With the Mitra Vibhushana honour, Sri Lanka has affirmed its deep respect for PM Modi’s leadership and India’s growing regional role.
