PM Modi, Canadian PM Carney Agree On Steps To Restore Bilateral Ties At G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, signalling a thaw in the diplomatic chill between the two nations.

Both leaders agreed to take measured steps to restore stability and forward momentum to the India-Canada relationship.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the meeting as ‘very positive and constructive’, highlighting the shared commitment to rebuilding ties grounded in democratic values, the rule of law, and strong people-to-people connections.

As a key first step, PM Modi and PM Carney decided to reinstate high commissioners in each other’s capitals at the earliest.

This move marks a significant signal of reconciliation after months of diplomatic tension.

Vikram Misri confirmed that additional diplomatic measures would follow in a phased manner.

Reviving engagement across sectors

The leaders also agreed to resume senior and working-level dialogues on a range of issues.

These include trade, technology, connectivity, and citizen exchanges—areas that both countries view as vital to bilateral progress.

The decision to re-engage reflects a shared recognition of the potential for cooperation in multiple domains.

The meeting also covered collaboration in clean energy, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, food security, and the supply of critical minerals.

With global attention focused on sustainable development and technological innovation, both leaders acknowledged the importance of aligning national efforts to meet global challenges.

Trade negotiations between the two countries, which had been paused, were another focal point.

Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney directed officials to resume discussions soon, aiming to unlock economic opportunities that benefit both economies.

Canadian PM Mark Carney praised India’s rising global influence and the constructive role it played during its G20 presidency.

He also acknowledged India’s leadership in counter-terrorism and multilateral cooperation.

PM Modi, in return, expressed gratitude for the G7 invitation and reflected on the continuity from India’s G20 vision to its contribution at the G7 platform.

With both sides committing to sustained engagement, the meeting between PM Modi and PM Carney marks a turning point in India-Canada ties.

The two leaders agreed to stay in contact and reconvene soon, reinforcing their commitment to a relationship built on mutual respect and shared global objectives.
