Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived in Sweden on the third leg of his five-nation visit and was welcomed at the airport in Gothenburg by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Swedish Gripen fighter jets escorted PM Modi’s aircraft as it entered Swedish airspace. The Prime Minister arrived in Sweden after concluding his visit to the Netherlands.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi’s visit aims to review the full spectrum of India-Sweden bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities to strengthen trade and cooperation.
The MEA stated that Prime Ministers Modi and PM Kristersson will hold bilateral consultations covering various sectors of cooperation.
Bilateral trade between India and Sweden has reached $7.75 billion in 2025, while Swedish foreign direct investment into India stood at $2.825 billion during 2000–2025.
The two leaders will also jointly address the European Round Table for Industry alongside Ursula von der Leyen.
The forum brings together leading business leaders from across Europe.
PM Modi had earlier visited Sweden in 2018 for the first-ever India-Nordic Summit.
India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, described the visit as highly significant and highlighted Gothenburg’s importance as Sweden’s technology, industrial and innovation hub.
“The Honourable Prime Minister will come today. He is coming at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson,” Bhushan said in an interview with IANS.
Anurag Bhushan noted that PM Modi would engage with Sweden’s business community during the visit. He also said the Prime Minister would address members of the European Roundtable of Industry.
“It is the second visit by our Prime Minister. He first came in 2018. But this visit is also significant because it is happening in Gothenburg,” he added.
Bhushan also said the visit comes at a significant time for India. He noted that the country is progressing towards concluding a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union.
