Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and representatives of Canada’s First Nations community warmly welcomed him at the airport.
This is PM Modi’s first visit to Canada under the new leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who extended the official invitation to participate in the summit.
Prime Minister Modi’s arrival follows a brief stopover in Cyprus, where he held comprehensive discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides to strengthen India-Cyprus relations.
In a post before his departure from India, PM Modi stated that the summit would offer “a great platform to exchange perspectives on various global issues and elaborate on the priorities of the Global South.”

His engagement will include interactions with key G7 leaders such as France’s Emmanuel Macron, UK’s Keir Starmer, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba, and EU Presidents Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa.
United States President Donald Trump, however, will be absent from the latter part of the summit due to an early return prompted by the escalating Iran-Israel crisis.
This context adds urgency to the summit’s discussions, where global peace, trade, and security are expected to take centre stage.
India-Canada relations in focus
PM Modi’s visit presents a pivotal chance to reset India-Canada relations, which suffered during former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure due to Khalistan-linked controversies.
By inviting Prime Minister Modi, Prime Minister Mark Carney signals a clear intent to repair and strengthen bilateral ties.
Indo-Canadian leaders have welcomed the development.
“PM Modi ji coming here shows both sides are willing to cooperate. This can greatly boost economic ties,” said Kushagr Sharma, President of the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce.
Mann Parekh, an Indo-Canadian community member, added, “This is a ray of hope for stronger India-Canada cooperation.”
PM Modi’s presence has generated immense excitement among Canada’s vibrant Indian diaspora, which includes 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and nearly one million Indian citizens.
His visit is seen as an important gesture of goodwill, not only toward improving diplomatic and economic relations, but also reaffirming India’s connection with its overseas community.
The Indian Prime Minister will also hold side-line meetings with other invited leaders from countries such as Brazil, South Africa, Ukraine, South Korea, Australia, and Mexico.
Coming shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s decisive ‘Operation Sindoor’, PM Modi’s presence at the summit further underscores India’s role as a key player in shaping the global geopolitical landscape.
His participation in the G7 reinforces India’s message of peace, resilience, and inclusive development on the world stage.
