Pak’s Ex PM Imran Khan Disqualified By Top Election Body Followed By His Conviction in Toshakhana Case

It was already feared that he might not be allowed to fight the elections in coming years and here, the fear has turned to reality.

The top election body of Pakistan – the Election Commission of Pakistan has disqualified Imran Khan, the ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan from contesting elections. He is disqualified for the coming 5 years and hence will not be able to contest in any elections in the given time span. It was already feared that he might not be allowed to fight the elections in coming years and here, the fear has turned to reality.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Imran Khan was pronounced guilty by Pakistan’s apex court in the Toshakhana case. He was given 3 years of jail. It is to be noted that Imran Khan himself was not present at the court hearing. The hearing was going on at Islamabad High Court. The judge ordered his arrest in the hearing while he was not even there.

Mr. Khan faced physical aggression on his arrest

As soon as the court issued the orders, Imran Khan was arrested by police in the eastern city of Lahore. He faced physical aggression during the arrest. A black cloth was covering his mouth and face. The main and back doors were reportedly forced open for the arrest, and even his workers experienced brutality.

150 Cases against Imran Khan

Since his removal in April of last year, Khan has had more than 150 complaints lodged against him. There are many complaints that Mr. Khan claims are politically motivated. The defense team for Khan announced that they would immediately appeal.

A team member remarked, “It’s important to mention there was no chance given to present witnesses, neither was time allotted to round up arguments.”

The Toshahkana Case which lead to Imran Khan being disqualified

The 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician was charged with abusing his position as prime minister. He purchased and re-sold goods acquired during foreign trips valued at more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).  Khan, however has denied doing anything illegal.

Miserable financial crises are going on in Pakistan, where people are not even able to buy basic food and amenities. Amidst all that, the country’s top officials or politicians rather than saving their nation are busy filling up their own pockets.
