Pakistan Sides With China, Russia At UN Over US Strikes On Iran

Despite a high-profile meeting between Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and US President Donald Trump earlier this week, Pakistan stood firmly with China and Russia at the United Nations Security Council, opposing the United States’ military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The UN convened an emergency session on Sunday at Iran’s request, following the joint US-Israeli bombing of its nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.

At the meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, strongly criticised the strikes, labelling them a violation of international law and the UN Charter.

Condemnation of military strikes

Ambassador Ahmad addressed the Council, stating that the US action came ‘on the heels of a series of brazen attacks by Israel’ and must be ‘unequivocally rejected’.

He urged the Security Council to denounce the attacks on facilities safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stating they directly contravened international humanitarian law and several UN resolutions.

Pakistan, in collaboration with its longstanding strategic partner China and ally Russia, circulated a draft resolution to the Council.

The resolution aims to condemn the military strikes and reassert Iran’s sovereignty.

The developments follow a recent lunch meeting between US President Donald Trump and General Asim Munir at the White House.

The encounter fuelled speculation about a potential strategic shift in Pakistan-US ties.

However, Pakistan’s statements at the UN indicate no such pivot, and instead reflect its traditional alignment with Beijing and Moscow on regional security matters.

Ambassador Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s ‘solidarity and full support for Iran’s inherent and legitimate right of self-defence’, aligning the country’s position with the UN Charter.

He also condemned what he described as ‘Israeli aggression’ and expressed unwavering support for Iran in the wake of increasing hostilities in the region.

Call for international accountability

Pakistan’s envoy emphasised the need for accountability in the use of force and respect for nuclear non-proliferation safeguards under the IAEA.

The joint strikes, he warned, could dangerously escalate tensions in an already volatile Middle East.

Pakistan’s stance at the Security Council reflects its consistent foreign policy alignment with China and Russia on key global issues, particularly in West Asia.

As diplomatic divisions deepen at the UN, Islamabad’s position underscores the strategic balancing act it continues to perform on the global stage amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
