
Independence Day celebrations in Karachi turned tragic as three people, including an eight-year-old girl and a senior citizen, lost their lives due to uncontrolled aerial firing, while more than 60 others were injured, local media reported.
The casualties occurred in different areas across the city.
In Azizabad Block-8, the young girl was hit by a stray bullet and died before reaching a hospital, Dunya News reported.
In Korangi, a man named Stephen was also killed by a stray bullet while on his way. Another death from aerial firing was reported in a separate location.
Rescue officials described the scene as chaotic, with gunfire and fireworks filling the streets at midnight, leading to numerous injuries.
According to Geo News, at least 64 victims were hospitalised, several in critical condition.
Authorities strongly condemned the practice, calling it dangerous and irresponsible, and urged citizens to celebrate the national day safely.
Police have launched operations across Karachi, arresting 20 people and confiscating weapons and ammunition.
Incidents of celebratory gunfire were reported from several areas, including Liaquatabad, Baldia, Korangi, Keamari, Lyari, Akhtar Colony, Mehmoodabad, Jackson, Orangi Town, and Paposh Nagar.
Further cases were recorded in North Nazimabad, Surjani Town, Sharifabad, Zaman Town, and Landhi.
In addition, five people were fatally shot while trying to stop robberies during the celebrations. Other victims were struck by stray bullets or falling gunfire.
Police said investigations are ongoing and promised strict action against those responsible.
Law enforcement teams continue conducting raids to maintain order across the city.
