More than 114 civilians lost their lives over the past two days in brutal attacks carried out by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on two major displacement camps in North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, according to local officials.
RSF Attacks Leave Over 100 Dead
On Friday, the RSF launched a deadly assault on the Zamzam displacement camp, killing more than 100 civilians and injuring dozens more. Ibrahim Khatir, the director general of North Darfur State’s health authority, confirmed the toll during a statement to Xinhua.
Among those killed were nine staff members of Relief International, a humanitarian organization operating a field hospital within the camp.
Second RSF Attack Hits Abu Shouk Camp
The violence continued Saturday, when RSF forces targeted the Abu Shouk displacement camp.
Khatir reported that 14 civilians died and dozens were injured in the attack.
Meanwhile, the Emergency Room, a local volunteer group, released a separate statement claiming that 40 civilians died and hundreds suffered injuries as a result of heavy shelling by RSF forces on the same camp.
The RSF has not issued any official comment regarding the recent assaults.
Escalating Conflict in El Fasher
El Fasher has witnessed intense fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since May 10, 2024.
The clashes have heightened tensions and raised concerns for the safety of thousands of displaced civilians sheltering in the area.
Ongoing War Continues to Devastate Sudan
Sudan has remained engulfed in conflict since mid-April 2023, when violence erupted between the SAF and the RSF.
According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), the war has claimed more than 29,600 lives.
The United Nations monitors the situation closely as humanitarian conditions worsen across the region.
