Former US ambassador Nikki Haley is reportedly poised to end her bid for the Republican presidential nomination, leaving Donald Trump as the sole contender, according to local media reports on Wednesday.

Haley is anticipated to make an official announcement during a speech scheduled around 15:00 GMT on Wednesday in Charleston, South Carolina, where she previously served as governor. Sources cited by the Wall Street Journal and CNN indicate her decision to withdraw from the race.

This development follows US President Donald Trump’s surprising victory over Haley in the Republican primary in Vermont, marking his second win in the 2024 White House race. Trump, 77, currently leads in every other state, positioning himself as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. He recently celebrated a successful performance in the Super Tuesday primaries, inching closer to securing the nomination and setting the stage for a potential rematch with President Joe Biden in November.

Haley, known for her appeal to affluent suburban voters and university graduates, was projected to garner only a few delegates needed to clinch the nomination. Despite her support base, she failed to impede Trump’s momentum, with the former president winning 14 out of 15 states on Super Tuesday. Her sole victory against Trump occurred in Vermont.

Meanwhile, incumbent President Biden also swept the Democratic primaries on Super Tuesday, albeit uncontested. The 81-year-old will now focus on delivering his crucial State of the Union address on Thursday.

Trump, aiming for a historic return to the presidency, addressed jubilant supporters at his Mar-a-Lago beach club in Florida, hailing the day’s outcomes as “amazing” and unprecedented. He emphasized the significance of Super Tuesday, characterizing it as a pivotal moment in the race.

Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, faced challenges in deterring Trump’s advancement since her distant third-place finish in the Iowa caucus earlier this year.
