In an extraordinary move, the Nepalese Army has taken charge of maintaining law and order after Gen Z-led protests triggered violent unrest across the nation.
A nationwide curfew has been imposed, effective from Tuesday night until 6 AM Thursday, as authorities brace for further disruption.
Civilian law enforcement had initially managed the situation under the Local Administration Act 1971. However, with rising chaos, the army formally intervened, announcing its authority through a national broadcast.
Wednesday’s demonstrations saw several government buildings, including the Supreme Court and Singh Durbar administrative complex, set ablaze. Fires burned into the next morning, with emergency services deployed to contain the damage.
Social media bans and discontent over corruption reportedly triggered the protests.
The Army’s statement accused ‘anarchist groups’ of exploiting the protests for looting, arson, and targeted violence. As of 10 AM Wednesday, 27 individuals had been arrested in connection with these acts.
Curfew Details & Exceptions
Essential services, including ambulances, fire brigades, and sanitation vehicles, are permitted to operate during the curfew. Citizens have been advised to cooperate with local security personnel to avoid unnecessary complications.
The Army has warned that any acts of vandalism or attempts to harm public and private property will be treated as criminal offences and dealt with severely.
Following former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, the Nepalese Army has reportedly reached out to emerging Gen Z leaders to begin dialogue on the nation’s political future. The move aims to open a channel for peaceful negotiation and long-term stability.
The military’s intervention in domestic civil affairs is rare in Nepal and underscores the seriousness of the current crisis.
As political uncertainty continues and civil unrest grows, the Army’s role in both enforcing order and shaping dialogue will remain under close domestic and international watch.
