Members of the Indian diaspora rallied outside the Indian High Commission in London to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They waved the Tricolour and chanted slogans such as ‘Modi, Modi’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’.
The participants said they wanted to protect India’s image abroad. They opposed demonstrations that they believed damaged the country’s reputation.
The rally took place amid protests by the Congress-led INDIA bloc and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) against the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The Opposition groups questioned the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
A diaspora member said the gathering aimed to counter attempts to tarnish India’s image internationally.
“We, as Indian nationalists, have come together to respond to their actions and raise our voices in defence of our country,” the participant said.
The member, however, urged protesters to pursue their grievances through legal channels.
The participant said they could approach the courts, including the Supreme Court, instead of holding demonstrations abroad.
The member questioned the evidence behind their allegations and suggested that opposition to PM Modi’s leadership drove the protests.
Another participant defended the government’s democratic mandate.
The member cited the opening of 300 million bank accounts for poor citizens as a key achievement of the Modi government.
A third participant said people could raise concerns without harming India’s reputation overseas.
REACH India criticised the NSUI-led demonstrations in a post on X. The organisation accused protesters of associating with anti-India groups. It further urged students in the United Kingdom to discuss Indian politics within India.
The BJP accused the Congress-led INDIA bloc and Rahul Gandhi of undermining Indian democracy. The party alleged that they sought to facilitate ‘regime change’ by targeting constitutional institutions.
