Tens of thousands of Americans took to the streets across the United States under the banner of ‘No Kings’, voicing opposition to President Donald Trump and his policies.
The protests, spanning from the East to the West Coast, were organised amid concerns that the President is steering the nation towards authoritarianism.
The ‘No Kings’ movement, inspired by the anti-monarchy sentiments of the nation’s founding, seeks to affirm the republican principles of the United States.
This was the second major protest after June, with organisers reporting larger crowds this time. Demonstrators filled Times Square in New York, while large crowds gathered in Los Angeles and Chicago.
Many participants combined humour with protest, wearing costumes and carrying placards to lampoon the administration.
The Democratic Party, civil rights organisations such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Campaign, and various trade unions, including teachers’ associations, supported the protests.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris encouraged citizens to join in peaceful demonstrations, emphasising that ‘in our country, the power is with the people’.
Focus on Federal Enforcement and Government Shutdown
The demonstrations coincided with a government shutdown caused by a standoff between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate.
Disputes over cuts to medical insurance and health-related programmes, which Trump argued would cost over $1.5 trillion, have left many federal operations stalled.
Protesters also decried the deployment of federal forces to Democratic-run states and increased immigration enforcement, accusing the President of overstepping constitutional limits.
In Chicago, Trump’s efforts to combat crime through federal enforcement sparked tensions with both local officials and demonstrators.
Organisers planned more than 2,500 protests across the country, with most taking place in cities including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and New York.
The ‘No Kings’ protests underline a growing public debate over executive power, federal authority, and the balance between security and civil liberties, reflecting the nation’s deep political divide.
