Mark Carney’s Liberal Party Wins Canada Election Amid Trump-Driven Nationalism

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded early Tuesday. He congratulated Carney on the win. “We will build an independent future for our great country,” Carney said in his victory speech.

The Liberal Party has won the Canadian election under new Prime Minister Mark Carney. A late surge in support helped them retain power. The shift followed strong nationalist sentiment triggered by US President Donald Trump’s attacks on Canada.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre conceded early Tuesday. He congratulated Carney on the win. “We will build an independent future for our great country,” Carney said in his victory speech.

By 3 a.m. (12:30 p.m. IST), the Liberals had won 150 seats. They led in 17 more. This would bring their total to 167—six short of a majority in the 343-seat House. They had 152 seats in the last parliament.

The Conservatives had won 132 seats and led in 13, making 145 likely. The NDP, led by Khalistan supporter Jagmeet Singh, was nearly wiped out. It won five seats and led in two. Singh lost his own race.

At the start of the year, the Liberals seemed headed for defeat. But Trump’s tariff threats and talk of annexation angered Canadians. Many voters switched to the Liberal Party in defiance.

Poilievre’s views mirrored Trump’s in many ways. That hurt his campaign. The change in Liberal leadership also helped. Carney, a former central bank head, replaced the unpopular Justin Trudeau.

Both leaders spoke of unity. Poilievre promised to work on a fair trade deal. Carney said, “Let’s end the division and anger.”

On the US, Carney said, “I’ll talk with Trump about our economic and security future.” He added he would reduce Canada’s reliance on the US.

Trump, who mocked Trudeau, has taken a softer tone on Carney. He said he could work with him.
