Mali Floods Claim 177 Lives As Rainy Season Intensifies

Mali Flood since the start of the rainy season has resulted in at least 177 fatalities, according to an official report released on Friday.

The report, issued by Mali’s Interministerial Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management, detailed 656 flooding incidents, which have also led to 148 injuries and the destruction of 37,999 homes. In total, approximately 264,646 people from 47,955 households have been affected, as reported by Xinhua.

The Malian Ministry of Education highlighted the impact on schools, stating that 128 public schools are currently occupied by flood victims. Additionally, 167 schools remain submerged, while 256 have completely collapsed.

Heavy rainfall continues to plague the country, causing rivers and their tributaries to overflow. In light of this ongoing crisis, Malian authorities have urged residents to evacuate flood-prone areas. They have advised citizens to clear blocked waterways and avoid traveling on flooded roads, whether on foot, motorbike, or in vehicles.

Residents are also cautioned to stay away from swollen rivers and to seek shelter indoors during heavy rains.

On August 23, the Malian government declared a “state of national disaster,” resulting in the postponement of the school year start date from October 1 to November 4.
