A devastating landslide in the port area of Manacapuru, located in Brazil’s Amazonas state, may have buried approximately 200 individuals, according to official sources.
On Monday, the Military Firefighters Corps of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported that a section of the Terra Preta Port, situated along the banks of the Amazon River, collapsed for reasons that remain unclear. Despite being under construction, the port has continued to operate as a crucial transportation hub, as noted by Xinhua news agency.

At the time of the incident, it is estimated that over 200 people were actively loading and unloading goods at the port. Initial reports indicate that an entire family aboard a floating boat was among those buried. Rescuers have also discovered debris from boats, pipes, houses, and vehicles in the waters of the Amazon River.
Authorities suspect that riverbank erosion, exacerbated by the severe drought affecting the Amazon region, may have contributed to the landslide.
In response to the tragedy, the Manacapuru city council issued a statement expressing deep regret and detailing ongoing rescue efforts. Teams from Civil Defense, the Military Firefighters Corps, and various other sectors are working tirelessly at the site to locate and rescue those trapped.
