Keir Starmer Resigns As UK Prime Minister; Labour To Elect New Leader

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced that he is stepping down as Prime Minister and leader of the governing Labour Party, bringing an end to a tenure that began after Labour’s landslide election victory in July 2024.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain in office until a new Labour leader is selected in the coming weeks. He stated that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and accepted the view of his parliamentary party regarding his leadership with good grace.

Starmer’s resignation comes amid growing criticism of his government’s policies despite leading Labour to its first general election victory in 14 years.

Reflecting on his time in office, Keir Starmer said he had always focused on putting the country first and creating a fairer Britain that shares opportunity and prosperity more widely. He also highlighted Labour’s transformation under his leadership, noting that the party had overcome significant political, financial and moral challenges.

Starmer pointed to efforts to rebuild public trust in economic management, defence and national security, while addressing internal issues that had damaged the party’s reputation.

Political pressure on Starmer had intensified in recent weeks.

The Observer reported that he had faced the reality of diminishing support, describing his position as increasingly unsustainable.

Attention has now turned to the leadership contest, with Andy Burnham emerging as a leading contender. His support among Labour MPs will likely have increased following his victory in the Makerfield by-election last week.

The Labour Party will likely begin the process of selecting a new leader in the coming weeks, with the winner set to become Britain’s next Prime Minister.
