On Saturday, US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Islamabad to head the American delegation for key discussions with Iran, as both sides begin a fresh round of diplomatic engagement.
The talks, held in Pakistan’s capital, come at a critical time, with global attention focused on their potential impact on regional stability and economic conditions worldwide.
Before departing from Washington, Vance expressed cautious optimism about the outcome of the negotiations. He said the United States is approaching the discussions with a constructive outlook, while making it clear that progress would depend on Iran’s willingness to engage sincerely.
The current round of dialogue marks the first formal interaction between the two countries under the present circumstances, following a temporary ceasefire that has reduced tensions in the region over the past two weeks.
The situation remains uncertain. Ongoing developments, including Israel’s military actions in the region and differences over broader geopolitical issues, continue to pose challenges to the negotiations.
The US team includes senior officials such as special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are likely to work towards establishing a structured framework for discussions in line with directions from President Donald Trump.
Vance reiterated that Washington is open to dialogue if it is conducted in good faith, but warned that any attempt to undermine the process would affect the course of the talks.
On the Iranian side, the delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The outcome of the discussions will likely play a significant role in shaping the next phase of relations between the two countries.
