Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Monday expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his congratulatory message following her decisive electoral victory. She said she looks forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between Japan and India.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Takaichi thanked PM Modi for his warm wishes after Japan’s House of Representatives election. She reaffirmed her commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and advancing shared regional goals.
Takaichi said both leaders would continue joint efforts to promote a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

Her remarks came in response to PM Modi’s message congratulating her on what he described as a landmark electoral success.
PM Modi said the India-Japan partnership plays a critical role in promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. He expressed confidence that ties between the two nations would reach new heights under Takaichi’s leadership.

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party achieved a historic result in Sunday’s election.
The LDP secured a two-thirds majority in the 465-member House of Representatives, crossing the 310-seat threshold. This outcome marked the first time a postwar Japanese party achieved such a margin in the lower house.
Media reports attributed the surge in seats largely to Prime Minister Takaichi’s popularity, strengthening her position to continue in office.
PM Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi have already engaged at the highest level. In November, they held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. The leaders discussed ways to accelerate cooperation across priority sectors, including innovation, defence, talent mobility, and trade.
Following the meeting, PM Modi described the talks as productive. He stressed that a strong India-Japan partnership remains essential for addressing global challenges and building a better future.
He also underlined the importance of expanding economic engagement alongside strategic collaboration.
That interaction marked PM Modi’s first meeting with Takaichi after she assumed office as Japan’s Prime Minister.
Takaichi took office in October last year after winning a parliamentary runoff election. She also made history as the first woman to serve as Japan’s Prime Minister.
Both governments continue to signal that India–Japan relations will remain a central pillar of their foreign policy agendas.
