Surrogacy is an inhuman practice that treats children like supermarket products, Italy’s prime minister said on Friday, urging parliament to approve legislation to penalize individuals who travel overseas for it.
Parenting through surrogacy is already illegal in Italy, punishable by jail and fines, but Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition has promised to implement an even tighter prohibition as part of its conservative platform.
At an event in Rome, Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, remarked, “No one can convince me that it is an act of freedom to rent one’s womb, no one can convince me that it is an act of love to consider children as an over-the-counter product in a supermarket”.
“I still consider the practice of uterus renting to be inhuman, I support the proposed law making it a universal crime”, Italy’s prime minister continued.
The Italian parliament is debating a bill written by Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party that would restrict Italians from having a kid in countries where surrogacy is legal, such as the United States and Canada.
The party’s position is similar to the Vatican’s.
Right groups and several opposition lawmakers have attacked the plan, which was approved by Italy’s lower house chamber and is currently being debated in the Senate, for targeting LGBTQ people.
Former foreign minister Emma Bonino said, “The issue cannot be tackled with universal prohibition, but with regulation that balances the rights at stake”.
