In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its operations in Rafah and central Gaza aimed to eliminate militants, dismantle infrastructure, and locate weapons. The escalation follows a large-scale offensive launched by Israel against Hamas after an October 7 attack by Hamas across the southern border, which left around 1,200 people dead and nearly 250 held hostage.

According to Gaza-based health authorities, the Palestinian death toll from Israeli strikes has now reached 43,314.
