Iran Signals Imminent Response After US Ship Seizure Escalates Maritime Dispute

Iran’s senior military command has warned that a response is forthcoming following a confrontation with US naval forces in the Gulf of Oman, further deepening tensions between the two countries.

The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters described the US action against an Iranian commercial vessel as ‘armed maritime piracy’, according to Iranian media reports.

The statement follows an incident in which American forces reportedly disabled a ship and boarded it after it attempted to pass through waters affected by a US naval blockade.

Iranian state outlets said the vessel’s navigation system was targeted before US personnel took control. In response, Iran claimed it launched drone operations against US warships in the area, with reports suggesting American vessels withdrew after the exchange. Independent confirmation of these claims has not been provided.

The developments come a day after US President Donald Trump stated that US forces had seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship accused of trying to bypass maritime restrictions near the Strait of Hormuz. He said a US Navy destroyer intercepted the vessel and disabled it before Marines secured control.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts appear to be faltering. Iran has reiterated that it will not engage in further talks with Washington while the blockade remains in place.

Officials have argued that the restrictions violate the terms of a recent ceasefire between the two sides.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also criticised the US measures, calling them unlawful and in breach of agreed terms.
