Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has announced that negotiations with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz have entered their final stages, signalling progress towards an agreement on managing one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, Araghchi said discussions had advanced significantly and were moving towards completion. He did not provide a timeline for the agreement but described the negotiations as being on the path to finalisation.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei later clarified that the talks are not aimed at deciding whether the Strait of Hormuz will remain open or closed.
Iran and Oman are working to establish a new maritime route under a traffic separation scheme that protects both countries’ sovereign rights and Iran’s security interests.
The talks come amid heightened regional tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Acting Defence Minister Seyed Majid Ebn Al-Reza said Iran treats every threat seriously and will continue strengthening its military preparedness and deterrence capabilities following recent remarks by US President Donald Trump.
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have escalated since the United States and Israel launched joint strikes against Iranian targets on February 28.
Tehran subsequently tightened its control over the strategic waterway.
Last month, the US military launched multiple strikes on Iranian positions to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping after attacks on vessels in the Strait.
Iran responded by launching missile and drone attacks against US military bases and facilities in the region, further raising concerns over stability and maritime security in the Gulf.
