The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has issued a critical appeal for $13.3 million to address the severe impact of recent floods in Yemen, which have left hundreds of thousands in urgent need of aid.
In a statement released Thursday, the IOM highlighted the devastating effects of severe flooding and powerful windstorms that have affected nearly 562,000 people across Yemen.
The funding appeal aims to provide immediate life-saving assistance to those impacted.
Matt Huber, the acting chief of mission for IOM Yemen, expressed the gravity of the situation: “Yemen is enduring yet another severe crisis, worsened by the convergence of ongoing conflict and extreme weather conditions.”
The torrential rains and subsequent flooding have devastated multiple provinces, including Ibb, Sanaa, Marib, Hodeidah, and Taiz, according to Xinhua news agency.
The floods have resulted in widespread destruction of homes, displacement of families, and significant damage to essential infrastructure such as health centers, schools, and roads.
The IOM reports that thousands of people are now without shelter, clean water, or access to vital services, with many lives tragically lost.
The floods have severely affected the Ma’rib Governorate. Since 11 August, strong winds have damaged 73 displacement sites, impacting over 21,000 households and disrupting public services, including electricity networks.
The floods have wreaked havoc since early August, with significant damage to shelters, roads, water sources, and medical facilities.
In Al Hodeidah and Ta’iz, more than 15,000 and 11,000 families, respectively, are in dire need of emergency support.
The floods have not only caused loss of life but have also destroyed the possessions and means of survival for entire communities.
The crisis is compounded by Yemen’s ongoing cholera outbreak and escalating food insecurity, further straining the country’s healthcare systems and increasing the vulnerability of displaced families.
