Indian Student Missing in US, Parents in Hyderabad Receive $1,200 Ransom Call

The parents of an Indian student studying in the US have been shaken by a ransom call demanding a significant sum after their son went missing. The unidentified caller claimed to have kidnapped their son and threatened to sell his kidney if they didn’t comply.

Abdul Mohammed, a 25-year-old from Hyderabad, had embarked on his journey to pursue a master’s degree in Information Technology at Cleveland University, Ohio, last May. However, concerns arose when he ceased communication with his family on March 7.

Last week, Mohammed Saleem, Abdul’s father, received a distressing call from an unknown number, alleging his son’s abduction by drug sellers in Cleveland. The caller demanded $1200 for Abdul’s release but did not specify the payment method. Additionally, he ominously threatened to sell Abdul’s kidney to the mafia if the ransom wasn’t paid, according to the family.

Alarmed, Abdul’s parents alerted their relatives in the US, who promptly filed a missing person report with the Cleveland police. Descriptions provided by the authorities mentioned Abdul wearing a white T-shirt, red jacket, and blue jeans.

In their quest to locate Abdul, the family has reached out to the Indian Council in Chicago for assistance. However, their distressing situation is compounded by the grim backdrop of recent events. This incident comes on the heels of the reported death of another Indian student in the US, marking the ninth such tragedy in less than three months.

The body of Abhijeeth Paruchuru, a 20-year-old engineering student in Boston, was discovered in a car in a forest. Though initial investigations found no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, the Consulate General of India in New York provided assurances.
