Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago, expressed his delight at their enthusiastic reception of Ram Lalla’s return to Ayodhya after 500 years.
PM Modi praised their deep faith and devotion to Lord Ram, underscoring the vibrant cultural connections that continue to unite India and the Caribbean.
Prime Minister Modi reminded the community of their role in the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, recalling, “We remember you had sent holy water and Shilas for building the Ram Mandir.”

He further shared that he had brought a replica of the Ram Mandir and holy water from the Sarayu River to Trinidad as a symbol of devotion and unity.
Highlighting the unique Ram-Leelas performed in Sangre Grande and Dow Village, PM Modi cited the Shri Ram Charit Manas, “राम धामदा पुरी सुहावनि। लोक समस्त बिदित अति पावनि।।” — meaning that the sacred city of Lord Ram is renowned worldwide for its divine glory.
The Indian Prime Minister expressed certainty that the community welcomed the return of Ram Lalla with immense joy and reverence.
Spiritual significance & blessings
PM Modi elaborated on the spiritual importance of the Sarayu River, stating that a dip in its waters unites one eternally with Lord Ram.
He also mentioned carrying holy water from the Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest spiritual gathering held earlier this year, and requested Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to offer these sacred waters to the Ganga Dhara in Trinidad and Tobago.

He hoped these blessings would enrich the people of the Caribbean nation.
Honouring the courage of the Indian community
Emphasising the resilience of the Indian community, Prime Minister Modi said their journey was ‘about courage’.
Despite the immense hardships faced by their ancestors, they persevered with hope and determination.
PM Modi reflected, “They left the Ganga and Yamuna behind but carried the Ramayan in their hearts. They left their soil, but not their soul.”
He hailed them as ‘messengers of a timeless civilisation’ whose cultural, economic, and spiritual contributions have greatly benefited Trinidad and Tobago.
The Prime Minister underscored the enduring ties, remarking, “Our bond goes beyond geography and generations.”
He paid tribute to prominent figures from the Indian diaspora, including Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the first woman Prime Minister; President Christine Carla Kangaloo; late Basdeo Pandey; and cultural icons such as Rudranath Capildeo, Sundar Popo, Darren Ganga, and Sewdass Sadhu.
PM Modi praised the community’s transformation, saying, “You, the children of Girmitiyas, no longer let struggle define you. Instead, you define yourselves by your success, your service, and your values.”
He humorously added that “their famous local foods, ‘doubles’ and ‘dal poori’, seemed to have a magical effect, because you have doubled the success of this great nation!”
Growing friendship & cultural heritage
Reflecting on his first visit 25 years ago, PM Modi recalled admiring cricket legend Brian Lara and noted how today’s stars like Sunil Narine and Nicholas Pooran continue to inspire youth.
He observed that Trinidad’s culture thrives vibrantly, with streets named after Indian cities and festivals like Navratri, Mahashivratri, and Janmashtami celebrated with great zeal.
Traditions like Chowtal and Baithak Gana thrive, strengthening the cultural fabric.
Prime Minister Modi concluded by acknowledging the warmth of familiar faces and the eager curiosity of the younger generation, expressing confidence that the bonds between India and Trinidad and Tobago will continue to deepen across generations and geographies.
