As Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his state visit to the Maldives on 25 July, members of the Indian diaspora in the island nation have expressed heartfelt excitement and pride.
The visit holds symbolic and diplomatic significance, as it coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day and the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic ties.
PM Modi was invited by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to attend the national celebrations as Guest of Honour, marking a key moment in India’s deepening engagement with its neighbours under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
The Indian community in Malé, the Maldivian capital, has been eagerly preparing for the visit. Many shared their emotional connection with the occasion.
“We are very happy about his arrival. I came here two years ago — the situation was not the same. The way India is admired here today is so great,” said one Indian resident.
Another community member praised the Prime Minister’s diplomatic efforts on the world stage, saying: “The way PM Modi is visiting different nations and making India proud globally is truly inspiring.”
For several members of the diaspora, the visit carries personal meaning. One individual, part of the team involved in organising the visit, remarked: “It is a matter of great pride that PM Modi is coming. I hope to meet him — I will definitely try to see him.”
Another resident added: “Our PM visiting the Maldives is exciting. Preparations are in full swing, and people, especially within the Indian community, are looking forward to his arrival.”
During his visit, PM Modi will engage with Maldivian leaders to strengthen cooperation across sectors such as trade, development, security, and people-to-people links.
The visit reflects India’s ongoing commitment to building strong regional partnerships.
Prior to his arrival in the Maldives, PM Modi concluded a landmark visit to the United Kingdom, where he participated in high-level engagements and oversaw the signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated: “A landmark visit to UK concludes, elevating the India-Maldives trade and economic ties to new heights. PM @narendramodi emplanes for the second leg of his tour- Maldives.
PM Modi’s visit will reinforce India’s strategic role in the Indian Ocean region and deepen its ties with the Maldives by promoting mutual respect, shared values, and regional cooperation.
