The virtual US-India 2+2 Intersessional Dialogue struck a positive tone for the future of India-US relations, contrasting with recent harsh statements from US President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and trade officials.
A readout issued by the External Affairs Ministry echoed the US statement.
Officials expressed eagerness to enhance the breadth and depth of bilateral ties in a way that benefits both countries.
“They advanced bilateral initiatives, discussed regional security developments, and exchanged perspectives on shared strategic priorities,” the statements said.
Trade, Energy, and Security Talks
The discussions focused on trade and investment, energy security, civil-nuclear cooperation, critical minerals exploration, counternarcotics, and counterterrorism.
The readouts reaffirmed cooperation even after the US Department of Homeland Security issued a draft notice that India would face 25 per cent punitive tariffs, in addition to the earlier 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs.
The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Additional Secretary Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur and Defence Joint Secretary Vishwesh Negi, alongside US officials Bethany Morrison and Jedidiah P Royal.
The intersessional dialogue takes place between 2+2 ministerial meetings to review ties and chart progress until the next high-level session.
Defence Cooperation and Quad Commitments
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Quad, which includes India, the US, Australia, and Japan, and to growing defence cooperation. They looked forward to increasing defence collaboration, including signing a new ten-year Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership.
The statements said they would build on progress under the US-India COMPACT initiative, covering defence industry, technology, operational coordination, regional cooperation, and information-sharing.
Despite President Trump’s claims of mediating Operation Sindoor and critical remarks on India’s economy, officials emphasised continued engagement to strengthen India-US relations.
