A recent report has highlighted the growing potential of closer economic cooperation between India and Taiwan, suggesting that their complementary strengths could significantly benefit both economies.
According to the report published by Taiwan News, Taiwan’s strong capabilities in hardware production, electronics, mining and food processing could align well with India’s major national initiatives such as Make in India, Digital India and Skill India.
The report noted that India’s expertise in software and services could combine effectively with Taiwan’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem, creating a balanced and mutually beneficial partnership. It also pointed out that India’s large consumer base offers new opportunities for Taiwanese businesses seeking to diversify away from dependence on China.
In addition, Taiwan’s agricultural technologies could help modernise farming practices in India, opening another area of collaboration.
The report also mentioned concerns that could affect ties, including safety perceptions linked to Indian workers in Taiwan. It urged that such issues should not be used to hinder improving relations, emphasising the importance of recognising India’s workforce as a key contributor to the global economy.
Additionally, it further recommended that both sides avoid external pressures that could disrupt their engagement and consider formalising trade relations through a free trade agreement.
Economic ties between the two sides have expanded over the past decade, with rising trade volumes and increased engagement between officials such as Taiwan’s representative Mumin Chen and India’s Director General Ninad Deshpande.
Efforts to deepen cooperation are also visible through industry-level exchanges.
A delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry visited Taipei earlier this month to explore partnerships in sectors like automobiles, electronics and smart mobility, with an emphasis on strengthening supply chains.
Recent Agreements and Institutional Expansion
Recent agreements have also supported collaboration, including a pact on organic product recognition signed in 2024.
Organisations such as the Taiwan External Trade Development Council and the Taipei Computer Association have expanded their presence in major Indian cities to facilitate business and investment opportunities.
