Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius witnessed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation in multiple sectors, including currency settlement, water management, and maritime security.
The Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India signed a major agreement to implement a Local Currency Settlement System.
Additionally, a Credit Facility Agreement between the Mauritius government and the State Bank of India will support water infrastructure projects under the Pipe Replacement Programme.
Further collaborations formalized through MoUs between the Institute of Foreign Service of India and the Mauritius Ministry of Foreign Affairs for diplomat training, as well as a technical agreement between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius Police Force for sharing White Shipping Information.
Other key agreements included cooperation between India’s Enforcement Directorate and Mauritius’ Financial Crimes Commission, as well as a partnership between the ministries of both nations to boost the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.
The Mauritius Ministry of Public Service and India’s National Centre for Good Governance signed an MoU to train public officials and enhance governance.
Another agreement between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and Mauritius’ Prime Minister’s Office will focus on maritime administration.
As part of India’s ongoing development assistance, PM Modi will also inaugurate two significant projects in Mauritius – the Civil Service College and an Area Health Centre – both constructed with Indian grant assistance.
These initiatives reflect India’s long-standing commitment to supporting Mauritius in capacity building and healthcare development.
India’s Global Development Initiatives
PM Modi’s approach to international partnerships extends beyond Mauritius, with India playing a key role in infrastructure and social development projects worldwide.
- Bhutan (2019, 2024): India financed the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital, providing specialized healthcare services.
- Bangladesh (2023): India assisted in the Akhaura-Agartala rail link, the Khulna-Mongla Port rail line, and the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
- Nepal (2022): PM Modi and Nepal’s Prime Minister inaugurated the Jayanagar-Kurtha railway, the first broad-gauge passenger rail link between the two nations.
- Seychelles (2021): India funded the construction of the Magistrates’ Court building in Victoria.
- Mauritius (2019, 2020): The Supreme Court building, Metro Express project, and New ENT Hospital were completed with Indian support.
- Afghanistan (2015, 2016): India contributed to the Afghan Parliament building and the Afghan-India Friendship Dam (Salma Dam).
- Sri Lanka (2015, 2022): The Jaffna Cultural Centre was established to strengthen socio-cultural ties.
Through these projects, India has reinforced its role as a reliable development partner, focusing on sustainability, mutual respect, and long-term cooperation across the globe.
