India And China Set To Hold Key Talks To Restore Bilateral Ties

India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, arrived in China on Tuesday to participate in the 23rd round of the India-China Special Representatives (SR) talks. These talks, set to take place on Wednesday, aim to restore the bilateral relations between India and China, which have been stalled for over four years due to the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

NSA Doval will meet his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, to discuss various issues critical to rebuilding ties between the two nations. These discussions come after the October 21 agreement on disengagement and patrolling in eastern Ladakh. This agreement, marking a significant de-escalation, expect to pave the way for more stable and constructive relations between the two countries.

China Expresses Readiness To Work With India

Ahead of the crucial talks, China reiterated its readiness to cooperate with India in implementing the commitments made between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Kazan, Russia, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October.

“China is ready to work with India to implement the important common understandings between the leaders, respect each other’s core interests, and settle differences through dialogue,” Lin said during a media briefing on Tuesday. He stressed that China aims to bring bilateral relations back to a track of stable and healthy development as soon as possible.

Focus On Peaceful Border Management And Boundary Resolution

As per the External Affairs Ministry, the SR talks will focus on managing peace and tranquility in the border areas and exploring a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable solution to the long-standing boundary dispute. This follows the commitments made during the Modi-Xi meeting in Kazan. The discussions will also build on prior engagements, including the meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart at the G20 summit in Brazil.

The military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, followed by a deadly clash at Galwan Valley in June that year. The standoff severely strained relations between the two neighbors, with bilateral ties coming to a near standstill, aside from trade.

The situation began to ease with the disengagement agreement finalized on October 21, which saw the resolution of the last two friction points in Demchok and Depsang. The SR talks scheduled for Wednesday mark a significant step as they represent the first structured engagement between India and China aimed at restoring relations.

A Historic Gap Of Five Years In SR Talks

The SR talks, which have been a key mechanism to address the India-China border dispute since 2003, are taking place after a five-year gap. The last SR meeting was held in 2019 in Delhi. While previous meetings have not resulted in a resolution of the boundary dispute, both countries view the SR talks as a valuable tool for addressing recurring tensions and seeking long-term solutions.

The Special Representatives’ talks represent a crucial moment in the bilateral relations between India and China. Officials hope that these discussions, following years of strained ties, will lead to a more stable and peaceful relationship, particularly in managing the sensitive border issue.
